Freerider 22 Black AVABAG

The Aqua Free Rider 22 airbag backpack from Ortovox. Ortovox has completely updated its bestseller around the new AVABAG system, to offer a bag which is ready for the piste and gives maximum protection.  The "S" is for 'short', since all of Ortovox's 'S' backpacks have a shorter back panel, making them perfect for women or for men with a shorter than average back. The shoulder and thigh straps are also adapted to the female body shape.

Heavier than the Ascent model, the Free Rider still holds its own and offers maximum protection. Weighing in at 1380g (without airbag system), the new Free Rider is extremely well balanced for excellent freeride performance.

Ortovox has invested a lot of effort into developing the SPS FLEX protector, a versatile unit integrating a back protector into the backpack panel. Built from eight pads that remain comfortably flexible even in the cold, the TÜV-certified protector adapts to the body and absorbs impact through the immediate hardening of the foam.
The broad hip belt and the avalanche backpack’s body-integrating silhouette ensure a perfect back fit for maximum safety. The interior of this freeride backpack with Airbag has been completely redesigned. 22 litres of true, fully usable volume have been wrapped around the AVABAG unit. The exterior of the bag offers all of the necessary freeride elements, and fixing systems for helmet and snowboard have been optimised.


This light, comfortable and extremely technical backpack is designed to help you in skiing off-piste, with its classic and well-thought-out characteristics such as diagonal ski attachments, an ice axe holder and a rope fastening.

AVABAG is the world's lightest airbag system!Ortovox has managed to cut its weight down to 640g, thanks to an innovative construction: the fabric is made without stitching or additional waterproofing, and the inflation unit is extremely minimalist.

With a reduced weight and volume of only 1.8 litres, AVABAG is the world's smallest and lightest Airbag system. One other feature of the AVABAG system is the option it gives to practise releases. You can train for deployment without a cartridge in place, as many times as you need, to help you prepare for the worst.

The avabag's handle is designed to be perfectly ergonomic and optimise the trigger mechanism when it's needed. The non-slip handle also offers a 360° shape which allows an easy trigger with all types of glove.
