Mammut, when an artisan becomes a major climbing equipment supplier

Initially a simple artisanal rope works founded in 1862 by Kaspar Tanner in the heart of Aargau, this Swiss company adopted the name Mammut in the 1940s to better reflect the power and strength of the climbing ropes which were still at the heart of its activity. Over the years, the company continued to develop its range of climbing equipment, forming partnerships with sportspeople and using their feedback to enhance the products still further.  By the 1980s, the family firm turned international had expanded into survival gear, such as shovels, electronic receivers and probes, as well as mountain clothing and footwear.
