How do I choose the right ski boots??

How to choose your ski boots is a recurrent question in the world of skiing, and one which is unfortunately often difficult to answer for the person concerned, since there are so many variables to take into account depending on who you're talking to. Follow our guide and treat yourself to a successful ski season, giving your feet all the comfort they need to hit the slopes all day long!

Ski boot size

Before you decide which type of shoe to choose, it's essential to determine which ski boot size is best suited to your feet..

"Why not just use my usual size to choose my ski boots" you might ask? Simply because ski boots use a different standard and unit of measurement, born almost 30 years ago: the Mondopoint.

What is Mondopoint??

The Mondopoint is a unit of measurement used by most ski boot manufacturers: it simply corresponds to the length of the foot in centimeters. This means that a ski boot with a Mondopoint size of 22 measures exactly 22 centimetres..

Although this conversion table is useful to give you an idea of your Mondopoint size, you must remember that these conversions may vary depending on the manufacturer, and cannot replace a true measurement of your Mondopoint size. Many variables can alter the fit of a ski boot, depending on the manufacturer or even the model and range of ski boots..

To choose the right ski boot size for your anatomy, you need to measure your actual Mondopoint size.

How do I measure my Mondopoint size??

Taking your Mondopoint measurement couldn't be easier. All you need are 4 very common accessories that you're bound to have at home::

  • A sheet of paper
  • A rule
  • A wall
  • A pair of ski socks

Once you've gathered all your accessories, all that's left to do is follow these 4 steps::

  • Place the sheet of paper on the Sol against your wall
  • Put on your ski socks and place your foot on the sheet, sticking your heel to the wall
  • Draw a line across your longest toe
  • Use a ruler to measure the distance between the edge of the sheet (where your heel stopped) and the line you drew

Don't forget to measure both feet, as it's not uncommon to have feet of different lengths. All you have to do is take the longest length you measured. Now you know the exact Mondopoint size of your feet! We recommend, however, that you go for a Mondopoint size 0.5cm above your current size, to be a little more comfortable in your ski boots, but also because feet tend to swell during longer or shorter ski sessions..

We highly recommend downloading and printing the Sidas Foot Sizer to help you find your ideal ski boot size and width even more easily and accurately!!

The BOA system: what impact does it have on my choice of size??

More and more modern ski boots feature the BOA tightening system, and you may be wondering whether this makes any difference to your choice of size. Good news: BOA doesn't change the size you need, but it does revolutionize the way your shoes fit!

What is the BOA system?

Visit bOA system replaces the 2 traditional hooks at the bottom of the shoe (those that tighten the instep) with a tightening knob connected to a high-strength steel cable. This cable passes through low-friction guides that distribute tension evenly. With a simple turn of the knob, you can adjust the tightening millimeter by millimeter: each click corresponds to an adjustment of around 1 mm..

The concrete advantages of BOA for size selection

The real advantage of the BOA is that it wraps around the foot, rather than applying downward pressure as traditional hooks do. What does this mean for you??

  • Reduced pressure points: the micro-adjustable clamping system distributes forces more evenly over the top of the foot. The result? Less than numb feet after a few runs!
  • Better heel support: the wrap-around system locks the heel into the rear pocket more effectively, improving the transmission of power to the ski and the responsiveness of your movements
  • Dynamic adjustment : the steel cable adjusts continuously as you ski, adapting to your movements and the natural swelling of your feet throughout the day

The big difference is that the BOA will give you much more flexibility in fine-tuning the fit. If you're hesitating between two sizes, or if you have a foot with a particular volume (pronounced instep, wide foot), the BOA's micro-adjustment will enable you to find the perfect fit where hooks would have forced you to choose between "too tight" and "not tight enough". A real boon for those who've always struggled to find the right shoe!
